Emily was engaging, patient, and understanding during all speech therapy zoom sessions with my daughter. She set realistic expectations and goals for the sessions, and she is consistently able to stick with them. -Erin
My name is Emily Aten-Newberry, MS CCC-SLP PA-L and I'm the owner of Above and Beyond Speech Therapy.
The heart of my speech therapy private practice is putting my clients and their families first, going above and beyond by helping in any way that I can to decrease frustration and increase communication. It brings me so much joy to see my clients gain confidence to become effective communicators! And collaborating with families is also very important to me. Home follow through is essential to success.
Before opening Above and Beyond Speech Therapy, I worked as a Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP) with school-aged children in the State College Area School District for over a decade. I have my speech therapy teaching certificate through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), my PA state speech therapy license, the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and a number of ACES awards from ASHA because of my extra continuing education credits. I graduated from Penn State with my Bachelor of Science in 2006 and my Master of Science in 2008, majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD).
I have provided evidence-based speech/language evaluations and therapy for clients who are autistic or have Down syndrome, Intellectual Disability, speech/articulation disorders, receptive and/or expressive language disorders, social language needs, and stuttering needs. I maximize a child’s speech and language abilities to reach their full potential.
I specialize in working with children with complex communication needs (CCNs) who need Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). No matter the child, I will work with them and their family to advance strengths, address needs, and find an effective communication system for them.
I truly believe that the child teaches me as much as I teach them.
I am a wife and mother to two kids, a cat, a ball python, a crested gecko, and whatever else my husband brings home! I love Schitts Creek, Bridgerton, Penn State, PiYo, being outside, and anything milk chocolate.
Melina is a Centre County native who was born and raised in Penns Valley. She graduated from Penn State with her Bachelor’s degree in 2018 and from Oklahoma State with her Master’s degree in 2020. Her credentials include a PA state speech therapy license, a PA Educational Specialist I certificate, and an ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC).
She has worked with children ranging from preschool to high school age in various settings including daycares, schools, and family homes. She values the importance of a family-centered approach to help children grow their communication skills both inside and outside of their speech therapy sessions.
Her spare time is spent adventuring with her pug, Stefan, thrift shopping, and enjoying Penn State football games.
Emily worked with my daughter Kaiya, who is non-verbal, to develop communication skills in order to convey everyday needs and wants. Due to my daughter's limitations, Ms. A used a multi-vector approach to help her extend her potential. Emily is enthusiastic, encouraging, and extremely helpful at making progress made during therapy translate into practical use. Therapy was always fun and my daughter enjoyed the interaction very much. - Sean
